THIS WEEK'S SCOUT REPORT

V'S SCOUT REPORT
FROM THE FIELD

Big two weeks ahead. A 67-year-old art institution takes over Winter Park, free jazz lands on two separate lakeshores, and a museum gives you a free night with one of the most significant photography exhibitions to hit Orlando in years. Here's what's worth your time.

V's Feature Pick

🎨 67TH WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL

When: Friday–Saturday, March 20–21, 9 AM–6 PM | Sunday, March 22, 9 AM–5 PM
Where: Central Park & Park Avenue, Winter Park
Cost: FREE

67 years in and still one of the most legitimate free cultural events in Central Florida. 215 artists selected from over 1,000 applications — this is a juried fine art festival, not a craft fair. Friday night concert in Central Park features Kim Waters on contemporary jazz/saxophone starting at 7:30 PM, with music from 3 PM. Food and beverage vendors throughout.

Here's the honest logistics breakdown because 250,000 people attend over three days and Park Avenue becomes impassable: Friday is your best bet — least crowded by far. Sunday afternoon is brutal. Park Avenue has zero usable parking on festival days — use Rollins College garage off Fairbanks/Holt or the garage off New England Ave and arrive well before 9 AM. Rideshare is genuinely the smarter call here. One important note for dog owners: no pets permitted on festival grounds per Winter Park city ordinance.

*Things to know going in: no pets

🍀 OVIEDO ST. PATRICK'S DAY FESTIVAL

When: Sat Mar 14, 4–9 PM|

City-run and actually well-organized — permit-required bag checks at entry tell me they have systems in place. The Byrne Brothers headline live Irish music, plus Central Florida Pipe & Drum Corps and Irish step dancers. Beer punch cards ($30 for 4 pours of Guinness, Smithwicks, and Harp) — buy online in advance to skip the long card line at the gate. Important for dog owners: no animals on the lawn, service animals excepted.

🐕 THU/FRI NIGHT MARKETS

When: Mar 12 + Mar 13, 6–10 PM |

Where: Thornton Park + Lake Nona

Cost: FREE

Two weeknight options, each with their own night. Thursday March 12TPD Night Market at Thornton Park, local makers, food trucks, dogs welcome.

Friday March 13Art After Dark Lake Nona under The Beacon, 40+ local makers, dogs on leash welcome, free garage parking. Low-pressure browsable evenings that don't require you to be "on."

ALSO THIS WEEK

🐕 WEEKEND MARKETS + ONE SPLURGE WORTH KNOWING ABOUT

Three dog-friendly market options running both weekends. Winter Park Farmers' Market Saturday mornings 8 AM–1 PM — peak season, arrive before 8:30 AM or use Park Place Garage. Lake Eola Farmers' Market Sundays March 15 and 22, 10 AM–3 PM — dog-friendly, vendor sells dog beer, free street parking one block off the park. Maitland Farmers' Market at Lake Lily same Sundays 9 AM–1 PM for a quieter alternative.

One over-budget mention: The inaugural Orlando Jazz Festival lands March 21–22 at Mennello Museum — GA starts at $65, which is over our usual range, but the lineup includes Chief Adjuah whose work bridges jazz and Afro-Indigenous rhythms. Culturally significant if jazz is your thing and you want to splurge once.

THIS WEEK'S INSIDER TIP

Three ways to build your weekend around free culture:

Thursday March 19 — OMA Access for All (midweek reset, free museum night)

Friday March 20 morning — Sidewalk Art Festival before the crowds hit

Friday March 20 evening — HAPCO Jazz Fest in Ocoee, lakeside and intimate

Saturday March 21 — Back to the Sidewalk Art Festival if you want more

All free. All local. No theme parks required.
